Chapter 15 – Alone Against All

Judges Chapter 15 continues the dramatic and complex story of Samson (Shimshon), Judge of Israel, in the Book of Judges (Sefer Shoftim). What began as personal conflict now escalates into national confrontation with the Philistines, as Samson’s life becomes increasingly entangled with Israel’s struggle for survival.

In this Torah teaching, Ari Abramowitz and Jeremy Gimpel explore how Samson—chosen by Hashem and empowered by the Spirit of God—acts through emotion, isolation, and grievance, yet still becomes a vessel for Divine redemption. Again and again, the text reveals a central theme: “Min Hashem” — it is all from Hashem.

From the burning of Philistine fields with foxes, to his betrayal by the men of Judah, to his capture and deliverance, Samson’s story exposes Israel’s spiritual crisis and internal fragmentation. Even those meant to stand with him declare, “Do you not know the Philistines rule over us?” revealing a nation in internal exile.

Yet in his weakest moment, bound and handed over by his own people, Samson is empowered to strike down a thousand Philistines with the jawbone of a donkey. What appears like chaos or personal revenge becomes another step in a larger unfolding redemption.

The chapter culminates with En Hakkore—the spring that emerges when Samson calls out to Hashem—highlighting how thirst, weakness, and prayer become channels for Divine help. Even when Hashem is not explicitly mentioned in Samson’s actions, the pattern of “Min Hashem” continues to shape history.

This chapter of Sefer Shoftim teaches a profound truth: redemption is not always clean or intentional. It often moves forward through human failure, internal conflict, and unexpected instruments, revealing Hashem’s presence precisely in the overlap between human action and Divine purpose.
