Shabbat For All Nations

שַׁבָּת לְכָל הָעַמִּים

Israel has guarded the seventh day for thousands of years. The commandment begins with one word: zachor, remember. For the first time, we are inviting the nations to remember it with us, and to experience it. Whether you are worn thin by a week that never ends, curious about the day God blessed at creation, or simply want your family around one unhurried table, this book shows you how to begin, this Friday.

A free ebook that shows you how to keep your first Shabbat, step by step. No Hebrew needed.

The problem

Every week disappears the same way.

The day never ends

"Work no longer ends when we leave the office. The boundaries that once shaped our days have dissolved into a constant stream of digital noise."

Connected, and alone

"With all the digital connectivity, more people feel more isolated than ever before."

Always doing, never being

"Instead of human beings, we should be called 'human doings'."

"A life without rest is not a life of flourishing, it is a slow forgetting of what it means to be human."

Jeremy Gimpel
From the author

"In a world that asks us to run faster, Shabbat calls us to slow down and walk with God."

Rabbi Jeremy Gimpel is the founder of The Land of Israel Network, a global community of families from many countries and cultures who gather each week to learn Torah, connect to the Land of Israel, and build a life guided by the Bible. He wrote this book as an invitation to people of every nation.

The answer is older than the problem

The seventh day was the first thing God ever called holy.

"There is nothing in nature that points to a seven day cycle, yet every culture in the world today recognizes a seven day week."

"And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it."

Genesis 2:3

The earth at dawn from space
Remember the Day
Creation

The seventh day God blessed and sanctified.

A Moral Imperative
Commandment

The fourth commandment, worth reconsidering.

Revere the Creator
Witness

A weekly testimony that the God of Israel is Lord of time.

Rehearse the Hope
Prophecy

A rehearsal for the world to come.

How to begin

Three steps. One day a week.

Shabbat runs from sunset Friday to nightfall Saturday. You do not need Hebrew, a synagogue, or anything you don't already have at home: a table, a couple of candles, bread, and the people you love. The book walks you through it line by line, from welcoming Shabbat on Friday evening to the Shabbat day meal and Havdalah.

  1. 1

    Download the ebook

Free PDF, 14 chapters. Where Shabbat comes from, why it was commanded, and exactly how to keep one, from Friday's preparations to Havdalah on Saturday night. It begins at the very beginning.

  2. 2

    Choose one Shabbat

"Light the candles. Put away the devices Friday night. Gather your family." Kabbalat Shabbat, candle lighting, Kiddush, blessing your children, breaking challah, the Shabbat day meal and Havdalah. Every blessing in Hebrew, transliteration and English.

  3. 3

    Keep three in a row

Not perfectly, and not under pressure. "Many people try Shabbat once and find it meaningful. But when Shabbat becomes a rhythm, it becomes transformational."

What changes

Six days you build the world.
On the seventh, you live in it.

The phone goes in a drawer. The table fills. The meal has no end time, because nothing more important is happening anywhere else.

You will notice it first in your children. They will begin asking when it starts. Then in your marriage, where no conversation is rushed. Then in yourself on Monday morning, returned and not merely rested. This is what it means to rehearse the world to come: one day lived the way it is meant to be, until the other six begin to change shape.

From the book

"Shabbat is not merely a pause from life. It is a return to life."

"When screens go dark, faces come into focus."

"Shabbat is rest from fear, from striving, from the endless message that you are not enough."
