Sefer Bereshit (The Book of Genesis)

A Journey Through the Foundations of Faith

Welcome to our study of Sefer Bereshit, the Book of Genesis, a text cherished deeply by both Jews and Christian Zionists. As the opening book of the Bible, Genesis lays the foundation for creation, covenant, identity, and the story of God’s unfolding relationship with humanity and with the people of Israel. Whether you come to this sacred text through Jewish tradition or Christian faith, Bereshit offers wisdom, inspiration, and a shared spiritual heritage that unites Bible-believers across the world.

A Brief Overview of the Book of Genesis

Sefer Bereshit begins with the creation of the world, revealing God’s power, purpose, and design. It spans ten generations from Adam through Noah, culminating in the story of the Flood and the rebirth of humanity. From there, the narrative shifts to the lives of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob, Rachel, and Leah, whose journeys shape the destiny of the nation of Israel and introduce themes central to both Jewish and Christian belief: covenant, faith, promise, and divine guidance.

The book closes with the story of Joseph, whose rise in Egypt sets the stage for the nation’s future and the events of Exodus. Throughout Genesis, the Biblical Heartland, places like Hebron, Be’er Sheva, Shechem, and Bet El appears as the backdrop of God’s promises and the unfolding story of the people of Israel.
